Alan Gardner, 1st Baron Gardner joined the Navy at the age of thirteen, and was promoted to captain eleven years later. He commanded a number of frigates and warships and served in the American War of Independence (1775-83). In 1786, he suppressed smuggling in the Gulf of Mexico and ordered detailed hydrographic surveys of Caribbean locations of interest to the Navy. In 1790 Gardner was appointed to a seat at the Board of Admiralty, which he held until 1795. He entered Parliament as an MP in 1790, and remained there until 1806 when he entered the House of Lords as Baron Gardner of Uttoxeter. Gardner was made an admiral in 1799.
