Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 9 portraits
Robert Gifford, 1st Baron Gifford, was called to the Bar in 1812 and practised law on the Western Circuit. He rose rapidly, and in 1817, he became Solicitor General. Gifford entered Parliament later that year, and was appointed Attorney General two years later. In 1821, he addressed the House of Lords in support of the Bill of Pains and Penalties that was brought against Queen Caroline. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Gifford in 1824 and was made Lord Chief Justice of the court of Common Pleas. It was expected that he would become the next Lord Chancellor, but he died from cholera at the age of forty-seven.
