Charles Green was the first man to ascend in a balloon filled with coal-generated hydrogen gas in 1821. He made over 500 ascents and airborne excursions between 1821 and 1852, one of which was a record journey of about five hundred miles from Vauxhall Gardens in London to Weilburg in Germany.
