Elizabeth (Gunning), Duchess of Argyll (1734-1790), Famous beauty
Sitter in 13 portraits
Celebrated beauty, second of the three famous Gunning sisters. She married James, Duke of Hamilton, surreptitiously, at Dr Keith's Mayfair Chapel; the ring was taken from a bed curtain. Her second marriage was to John, Duke of Argyll. Queen Charlotte was jealous of the king's admiration for her.
