Harlow trained as a painter, first under Hendrik Frans de Cort, then under Samuel Drummond and finally with Thomas Lawrence. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1804, with a portrait of Dr Thornton, after which he concentrated on portrait painting. Harlow became highly regarded as a portrait painter, and was skilled in a variety of medium including oils, pencil, chalk and crayon. He produced many portraits of actors and actresses
