Sir Hubert von Herkomer

(1849-1914), Painter and illustrator

Sitter in 11 portraits
Artist associated with 53 portraits
Born in Germany, Herkomer's family settled in England, where he studied painting at Southampton and the South Kensington Schools. He worked first as an illustrator, but soon achieved great popular success with his subject paintings depicting the lives of the poor. He turned increasingly towards portraiture in the 1880s, and became one of the most successful and wealthy portraitists of the period. Herkomer built his own house, 'Lululaund' at Bushey, Hertfordshire, where he later experimented in various media, including mezzotint and enamels, as well as becoming absorbed in the possibilities of film in his last years.
