Sitter in 6 portraits
Artist associated with 73 portraits
Hoare was apprenticed to the painter and sculptor Giuseppe Grisoni, with whom he travelled to Rome in 1728. He returned to England ten years later and moved to Bath, becoming the first fashionable portraitist to settle in that town. During the 1740s and 1750s, Hoare portrayed many influential politicians and social leaders, including prime ministers Pitt and Walpole, and the composer, Handel. Included amongst his patrons were the Duke of Newcastle, the Earls of Pembroke and Chesterfield, and the Duke of Beaufort. With Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, he was a founding member of the Royal Academy. Hoare was the father of painter and dramatist Prince Hoare.
