A philosopher who wrote extensively on history, geometry and politics, Hobbes's major work, Leviathan (1651), was an important influence on many areas of social and political thought. He was the friend of Francis Bacon, Ben Jonson and William Harvey, and tutor of Charles II, who later granted him a pension, but his reputation as an atheist gained him many opponents within the Church and government.
