Horace Hone entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1770, exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1772 and being elected ARA in 1779. In 1782 he went to Dublin and established a practice as a miniature portrait painter. He specialised in richly coloured head-and-shoulders miniatures, working mostly in watercolour and occasionally in enamel; he also produced some engravings. Appointed Miniature Painter to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1795, he returned to London in 1804, also working in Bath that year. Hone continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1822.
