Jacobson became Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford (and thus a Canon of Christ Church and Rector of Ewelme) in 1848; he was Treasurer from 1857 to 1865. From 1865 to his retirement through ill health in 1884, Jacobson was Bishop of Chester.
