John Rushworth Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe (1859-1935), Admiral

Sitter in 17 portraits
A career naval officer, Jellicoe supported Winston Churchill and the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir 'Jackie' Fisher, in their campaign to modernise the Navy and introduce the Dreadnought battleship. Jellicoe became Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet in 1914 and, after the decisive Battle of Jutland, First Sea Lord in 1916. He introduced the convoy system to defend commercial shipping against U-boat attack, greatly reducing losses. However, Lloyd George dismissed him in 1917. A post-war tour of the Empire by Jellicoe led to the creation of a naval base at Singapore, and the establishment of the Indian and New Zealand navies. He was Governor-General of New Zealand from 1920 to 1924.
