Joanna of Navarre (1370?-1437), Queen of Henry IV
Sitter in 2 portraits
Joanna was the widowed Duchess of Brittany, and daughter of Charles II, King of Navarre. She became the second wife of Henry IV whom she married by proxy in 1401 and in person at Winchester in 1403. Her eccentric interest in astrology led to her becoming the centre of a witch-hunt and she spent her latter years first in protective custody at Pevensey from 1419-22 and then in private retirement.
