Edward Johnston
(1872-1944), CalligrapherSitter in 2 portraits
Instead of practising medicine, for which he had trained, Edward Johnston taught himself the art of lettering, and began to teach others. He taught at the Central School of Fine Arts and Crafts, London, and subsequently at the Royal College of Art. His books, Writing and Illuminating, and Lettering (1906) and Manuscript and Inscription Letters (1909), were landmarks in the revival and development of calligraphy. He is most famous for designing the sans-serif Johnston typeface, and the famous roundel logo, both of which are used throughout the London Underground system.
