William Stephen Richard King-Hall, Baron King-Hall
(1893-1966), Naval Officer; writer and commentatorSitter in 29 portraits
King-Hall was the grandson, son and nephew of admirals, and a seafarer himself. Having been involved at Jutland on the Southampton, he served in various posts in the Navy until he was promoted commander in 1928 and was called to work on the naval staff. King-Hall wrote for the press under a pseudonym, publishing his first book, Western Civilization and the Far East (1924) under his own name. In 1929 he resigned from the Navy to take a research post in the Royal Institute of International Affairs. In the 1930s King-Hall broadcast on current affairs in the BBC Children's Hour, popular with children and adults alike. In 1939 he entered the House of Common, founding the Hansard Society in 1944.
