Henry Gally Knight

(1786-1846), Writer on architecture

Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 7 portraits
Knight wrote and published poetry between 1816 and 1830, but the mixed reviews he received prompted him to turn his attention to the study of architecture. He made tours of Normandy and Sicily, studying the architecture of these regions and published books relating to these expeditions, including the two-volume Ecclesiastical Architecture of Italy from Constantine to the 15th Century (1842-4). Although Knight's work was that of an amateur antiquarian, his books were influential for some early Victorian architects.
