Laura Knight (1877-1970), Artist and wife of Harold Knight

Dame Laura Knight

Sitter in 32 portraits
Artist of 2 portraits
Knight studied at the Nottingham School of Art, and there met her future husband Harold Knight. After marrying in 1903, they joined an artists' colony at Staithes, Yorkshire, before moving in 1908 to Newlyn, Cornwall. In 1929 Knight was created Dame of the British Empire, and in 1936 became the third woman elected to the Royal Academy. During the war, her distinguished career and popularity with the British public made her an obvious choice for the War Artists Advisory Committee, who tasked a selection of British artists with recording the war at home and abroad. In 1945 Knight asked to be sent to the trial of Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg. Her retrospective at the RA in 1965 was the first accorded to a woman.
