Novelist and poet. Lawrence's early novel, Sons and Lovers (1913), is set against his own background of a Nottinghamshire mining family. Later works dealing with personal relationships, sexual experience and spontaneous emotion had a profound literary and social impact: The Rainbow was published in 1915, Women in Love in 1920, and Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1928, although it was banned until 1960.
