Painter, sculptor and etcher; born in Dijon and spent early career in Paris; encouraged by Whistler to come to London, 1863; Slade professor of fine art, 1875-92 where his insistence on the quality of line laid the foundation for the Slade tradition of fine draughtsmanship, and where he founded an influential etching class. His importance as an etcher lay largely in the revival of original portraiture. His pupils included William Strang and Charles Holroyd.
