Laurence Steven Lowry was born in Rusholme, Manchester , and attended Manchester School of Art from 1905 to 1915, under Adolf Valett, whose view of urban Mancunian smog may have influenced him. Renowned for his industrial landscapes of northern England, peopled with matchstick figures, and for his reclusive private life. From 1915 to 1925 he was enrolled at the Salford College of Art. From 1909 to 1948, when he moved to Mottram-in-Longendale in Cheshire, he lived and painted at Pendlebury. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1962, and was given the freedom of the City of Salford in 1965.
