Admiral and Arctic explorer; entered the navy, 1831, and first saw service in the Arctic in 1848; established a reputation for his long explorations by sledge and did much to perfect Arctic sledging. McClintock commanded the famous search for Sir John Franklin, 1857-59, which confirmed the loss of Franklin's 1845 expedition and which McClintock described in a widely read account; knighted, 1860, and served in various commands until his retirement in 1884.

He was the son of Henry McClintock and his wife Elizabeth Melesina Fleury, daughter of the Ven. George Louis Fleury, Archdeacon of Waterford. The Fleury's were a French Huguenot family that came to Ireland when Elizabeth's Great Grandfather Rev Louis Fleury was one of William of Oranges Chaplains and was present at the Battle of the Boyne. The McClintock family had lived in Ireland since the early 1600's, first in Co. Donegal and latterly at Drumcar, Co. Louth. The 1st Lord Rathdonnell was F L McClintock's 1st cousin.
Henry & Elizabeth had a numerous family. They lived in Dundalk, Co. Louth.
