Lt. Col. Hon. George Mackenzie, 2nd Bn., 73rd Highland Regt. was the younger brother of Col. John Mackenzie, Lord MacLeod, 73rd Highland Regt. and were both sons of the late Earl of Cromarty. As a Captain, George Mackenzie served in America in the 42nd or Royal Highland Regt. (Black Watch/3SCOTS) as the Commander of the Regiment's Light Infantry Company from Aug. 1776 to June 1778, when he returned to Scotland as Major of his brother's new regiment. When the 2nd Bn., 73rd Regt. was raised, George Mackenzie was selected as Lt. Colonel.. After the siege of Gibraltar, the 2nd Bn was reduced in 1783 and Lt. Col. Mackenzie traveled to India and became Lt. Col. of the 73rd Regt. which was later renumbered as the 71st Highland Regt.
