In 1895, Charles Spencer-Churchill married the American railroad heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt. They were divorced in 1921 but the Vanderbilt dowry was used to restore Blenheim Palace, and replenish its furnishings and library. Spencer-Churchill served as Paymaster General from 1899 until 1903, when he was appointed Under-Secretary for the Colonies. He was a first cousin of Winston Churchill.
