Queen Mary
(1867-1953), Queen consort of King George VSitter associated with 404 portraits
Queen consort of George V. The couple married in 1893 and were declared Prince and Princess of Wales in 1901. A strong supporter of the British Empire, Mary fell in love with India when she toured the country in 1905 and 1910-11. She became Queen consort in 1910 and worked tirelessly to promote charitable causes, particularly during the First World War. After the war, she formed the Queen's Work for Women Fund. She was appalled that her son Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson and refused to meet his new bride.
