Later Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 2 portraits
Artist associated with 3 portraits
Moore came from an artistic family; his father and several of his brothers were painters. He exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy when he was just sixteen, and enrolled at the Royal Academy schools a year later. In the mid-1860s he became close to James Whistler and Frederic Lord Leighton. He shared a studio with Whistler and began to produce the decorative works for which he is best known today. Moore specialised in painting draped female figures, depicted alone or in groups. He concentrated on the aesthetic qualities of an image, with no Biblical or literary references. On his death, his friends organised a retrospective of his work, the first exhibition of his paintings.
