Known as a 'mugger', the comic actor Joseph Munden was celebrated for his astonishing talent for pulling faces. The writer Charles Lamb was a particular admirer and described in his essays 'the invisible wardrobe' from which Munden chose his famous expressions. He was particularly well-known for his drunken scenes and kept audiences at Covent Garden Theatre entertained for over twenty years.
