Sir Edward Nicholas

(1593-1669), Secretary of State

Sitter in 10 portraits
Appointed Secretary of State to Charles I in 1641, Nicholas remained a loyal supporter of the royal family throughout the Civil War, first taking charge of administration from the court at Oxford and later following them into exile on the continent. Though not trusted or liked by Henrietta Maria, he joined Charles II at Aix-la-Chapelle and was later reinstated as Secretary of State at the Restoration.
