A highly successful portrait painter; Irish-born William Orpen was a War Artist from 1917, painting scenes from the Western Front. In 1919 Orpen began making portraits of political and military leaders in Paris for the Versailles Peace Conference, including two large groups, A Peace Conference at the Quai d'Orsay and The Signing of the Peace in the Hall of Mirrors (Imperial War Museum).
