A visionary landscape painter and etcher, Palmer was deeply influenced by William Blake, whom he met in 1824. He led a circle of young painters known as 'The Ancients', whose name reflected their desire to revive an artistic golden age from the ancient past. He is best known for the visionary landscapes of his Shoreham period (1826-35)
