Politician, soldier and art patron. A leading Whig statesman, he advocated parliamentary reform and supported the aspirations of the American colonists for greater independence. His motion in the House of Lords in 1778 for the withdrawal of British troops from America was opposed by Chatham who collapsed in the ensuing debate.
