Sitter associated with 6 portraits
Rolle entered Parliament as an MP in 1780, where he was a supporter of William Pitt the Younger. In 1782, Charles James Fox, then Foreign Secretary, recalled Admiral Rodney from the Caribbean. Rolle condemned this action, and his outspoken attacks on Fox and Edmund Burke in the early 1780s led to his being the target for satirical attack in the Rolliad, published in the Morning Herald. Rolle was raised to the House of Lords in 1796 as Baron Rolle. An active debater, he was opposed to Catholic relief and parliamentary reform.
