John Russell, 1st Earl Russell (1792-1878), Prime Minister and writer

As a Member of Parliament for the Whig party from 1813, Lord John Russell's efforts to reform Parliament contributed to the introduction of the Reform Act in 1832. Prime Minister 1846-52 and 1865-6 and Foreign Secretary 1859-65, he exemplified the Whig doctrines of civil rights, toleration of dissent and respect for education.
