Artist of 5 portraits
Spencer studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1907-12). In 1918 he was commissioned as an official war artist and produced Travoys with Wounded Soldiers. His most ambitious evocation of the War is the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere (1927-32). Spencer's notable works include The Resurrection, Cookham (1924-6), depicting his love for his first wife Hilda and Double Nude Portrait: The Artist and His Second Wife (1937). Following his work as an official war artist, Spencer returned to Cookham, where he became increasingly eccentric. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1950. In 1955 he was honoured with a major Tate retrospective. He was knighted in 1959.
