Soldier and statesman, who three times led invasions of France (1513, 1523 and 1544). Although he had a wife living, he secretly married Henry VIII's sister Mary, widow of Louis XII, in Paris (1515). He supported Henry's efforts to obtain a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and was steward of his household.
