Satirist; author of Gulliver's Travels. Born in Dublin, he visited London where he met Addison, Steele and Congreve. Dean of St Patrick's, Dublin, from 1713, but his support for the Tories cost him further preferment and after 1715 he lived mostly in Ireland.
