The satirical author Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, where he served as Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral from 1713. Visiting London, he became friends with the writers Congreve, Addison, Steele and Pope. Swift's own successful literary career had been launched with A Tale of a Tub (1704), and his fantastical satire on contemporary politics and manners, Gulliver's Travels (1726), secured his lasting reputation.

The Later Stuart Portrait Catalogue entry for Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) mentions a cancelled appointment between Sir Godfrey Kneller and Jonathan Swift and makes no statement regarding whether they met at a later date. Recently I was researching some family genealogy and came across the will of Dr Sidney Bourne Swift which bequeaths "the original picture of Dean Swift painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller". Sidney died in 1914 in California, USA. He was the son of Edward Bulkeley Westropp Swift and Louisa Emma Bourne. Edward's parents were Godwin Swift, son of Rev Godfrey Swift and Jane Sophia Swift, daughter of Richard Swift linking Sidney to the Swift family of Swift's Heath and Jonathon Swift. The will of Sidney Bourne Swift can be viewed on the Ancestry.com website.
