Archibald Campbell Tait

(1811-1882), Archbishop of Canterbury

Sitter in 36 portraits
Archbishop of Canterbury; made a Fellow of Balliol College, 1834, and ordained, 1836; held a firm, but tolerant, line on the Oxford Movement; became successively Bishop of London, 1856, and of Canterbury, 1869. A keen evangelist and promoter of charitable works, Tait's statesmanlike and moderate handling of the religious controversies of the period made him one of its most influential and respected churchmen.
