Labouchere entered Parliament as a Whig MP in 1826. He served in a number of government offices under three prime ministers. In Earl Grey's ministry, he was Civil Lord of the Admiralty, Vice-President of the Board of Trade and Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. His final cabinet posting came in 1855 in the first Palmerston government, in which he served as Secretary of State for the Colonies.
