Richard Grenville-Temple, 2nd Earl Temple (1711-1779), Statesman
Sitter in 15 portraits
Grenville-Temple entered Parliament as an MP in 1734. In 1754, his sister Hester married William Pitt, and from that time, Temple's career was linked with that of his brother-in-law. He was made First Lord of the Admiralty in 1756, and was appointed Lord Privy Seal the following year. He was disliked by King George II, who dismissed both him and Pitt from office in April 1757. By 1765, the friendship between the brothers-in-law was dissolving; and when in 1766 Pitt consented to form a government, Temple refused to join. Although he had been offered the head of the Treasury, he was offended that he would not share with Pitt the ability to nominate to other offices. He soon after retired from public life.
