Peter Toms (active circa 1748-died 1777), Painter and herald
Sitter in 3 portraits
The son of an engraver, Toms was apprenticed to the portrait painter Thomas Hudson. From 1749, he worked in London as a specialist painter of costume in other artists' portraits, known as a drapery painter, and from about 1755 he worked in this capacity for Joshua Reynolds. In 1768 Toms was elected a founder member of the Royal Academy, possibly because of his close professional relationship with Reynolds and other prominent artists.
