Civilian Consulting Surgeon to the British Army in South Africa. He was placed in charge of a field hospital which accompanied the Ladysmith Relief Column; he was present at the Battle of Colenso and at the entry into Ladysmith. He published articles in the British Medical Journal about his experiences, which were republished in 1900 as a book, 'Tale of a Field Hospital'.
