Sir William Turner Walton (1902-1983), Composer

Sitter in 26 portraits
Influenced by jazz and the music of Stravinsky, he collaborated with Edith Sitwell on Façade (1923), a musical accompaniment to poems by Sitwell. Walton met Edith's brother Sacheverell at Oxford University (1918), after which the Sitwells provided him with patronage and encouragement. His later works, notably Belshazzar's Feast (1931), three concertos and two symphonies, show the evolution of a personal style combining modernist elements with traditional form. From 1919 until 1933 Walton was a part of the Sitwell brothers' household and through their association with Constant Lambert met the composer's brother Maurice. Walton was knighted in 1951.
