Mary Augusta Ward (née Arnold) (1851-1920), Novelist, philanthropist and political lobbyist; wife of (Thomas) Humphry Ward

Sitter in 32 portraits
The daughter of Thomas Arnold, Mary Augusta Ward took an active interest in social work for London's poor and in women's education. She embodied her views in her best known novel Robert Elsmere, 1888, which excited great public interest, the sales of the first three editions amounting to 70,500 in the United Kingdom alone. She married Thomas Humphry Ward, fellow and tutor of Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1872. In her later life, however, she became a vigorous opponent to the women's suffrage movement.
