Joseph Wilton was the leading British-born sculptor to be working in London in the second half of the eighteenth century. He was a member of the Royal Society of Arts and a founder member of the Royal Academy, where he was appointed Keeper in 1790. Eighteenth-century commentators compared him to Phidias, Michelangelo and Bernini, the most revered sculptors of the classical, renaissance and baroque periods.
