Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII) (1894-1972), Reigned 1936

Sitter associated with 345 portraits
Eldest son of George V and Queen Mary; reigned January-December 1936. Edward was commissioned in the Guards during the First War in 1914, but his request to fight was refused owing to the potential dangers. Although a non-combatant he spent most of the war abroad, visiting troops. The easy manner he acquired with all kinds of people stood him in good stead for the roving ambassadorial trips, his concern for the unemployed at home and his travels throughout the empire made him popular. He was king from January to December 1936. His abdication followed insoluble constitutional problems raised by his proposed marriage to the American divorcée, Wallis Simpson.
