Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley
(1833-1913), Field MarshalSitter in 44 portraits
A military commander in many parts of the Empire, Wolseley led the belated expedition to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum, 1884-5. Later Commander in Chief of the British Army, he was responsible for important reforms. Wolseley was the model for Major-General Stanley in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Pirates of Penzance.
