Novelist Charlotte Yonge compiled two series of Biographies of Good Women (1862 and 1864). Devout and conservative, Yonge's diverse collection of international and historical women, including Sarah Trimmer and Hannah Moore, were united by their Christian faith. Yonge declared her 'full belief in the inferiority of women', but was nevertheless actively involved in furthering their education. Her novels were intended to offer a pattern of dutiful behaviour to middle-class girls and her Biographies represented 'the diamond of perfect womanhood'. Her novels include The Heir of Redclyffe (1853) and popular historical romances.
