Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788), Landscape painter

Francesco Zuccarelli studied painting in Rome and Florence. By 1732, he had settled in Venice, where he quickly became celebrated for his prolific output of pastoral scenes. Zuccarelli left Venice for London in 1752 where he lived for most of the next twenty years. His reputation was such that in 1768 he was one of the twenty-eight painters selected as founding members of the Royal Academy. Zuccarelli enjoyed the patronage of royalty and of many wealthy English collectors. He created a distinctive style of decorative pastoral landscape, which changed little in his long, productive career.
