Hardy Amies was a fashion designer. He began his career in couture at Lachasse in 1934. During the Second World War he contributed to the 'Utility' scheme operated by the Board of Trade, but he opened his own fashion house in 1945. Amies was known for his tailored suits and dresses in woollen and tweed fabrics and for lavish satin and tulle evening dresses and ball gowns influenced by the Dior 'New Look'.
