Albert Victor Alexander was a Labour and Co-operative politician. In 1920 he was made secretary to the Co-operative Congress, the national conference for the British Co-operative Movement; he held this post until 1946. Alexander was elected to Parliament as a Co-operative Party MP in 1922. When Labour formed its first government in 1924, Ramsay Macdonald made Alexander Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State to the Board of Trade. He went on to serve three times as First Lord of the Admiralty, including during the Second World War, and as Minister of Defence under Clement Attlee.
