Anthony Perrinott Lysberg Barber, Baron Barber of Wentbridge
(1920-2005), Chancellor of the Exchequer; Chairman, Standard Chartered BankSitter in 24 portraits
After serving in World War II, and training as a barrister, Anthony Barber entered Parliament as a Conservative MP in 1951. He served as Minister of Health and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, before becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1970. During his period in office, he took a number of inflationary measures that led to the 'Barber Boom'. Wages were capped for public sector workers, which in turn led to unrest among trades unions. A miner's strike followed, and the government introduced a 'three-day week' to cope with the consequent lack of electricity. Barber did not stand for Parliament in the 1974 general election. He was Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank from 1974 until 1987.
